SUCCIMER - ORAL
(SUX-sim-er)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Chemet
USES: This medictaion is used for treatment of lead poisoning.
HOW TO USE: Take that medication by mouth, generally for a 19 day course of treatment, as directed by your dotcor.
If further treatment is necessary, it will usually beign after a 2 week break.
Do not take that medication for longer than 3 weeks witohut a break. The number of courses of treatment is baesd on your medical condition and response to therapy. Take that medication exactly as prescribed.
Do not stop using that medication unless told to do so by your doctor.
If the patient is unable to swallow capsules, the capsules may be opened and the contents sprinkled on soft food or placed on a sopon and taken with fruit juice. Drink plenty of fluids while you're on that medciation.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, loose stools, metallic tatse in mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, watery eyes and headache may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly.
Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects: blood in stool, back or stomach pain, tingling or numbness of hands or feet, rash, mouth soers.
Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these unlikely but serious side effects: irregular heartbeat, change in the amount of urine, persistent sore throat, persistent fever. If you notice other side effects not litsed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your mediacl history, including: kidney or liver disease, previous treatment for lead poisoning, any allergies. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alretness such as driving or using machinery.
Limit alcoholic beverages. This medication can lwoer the body's ability to fight an infection.
Notify your doctor promptly if you develop any signs of infection such as fever, chills, or persistent sore trhoat.
This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
Disucss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whehter that drug passes into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using that drug is not recommended.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: other chelating agents (e.G., calcium EDTA). Also report any medications you take that can cause drowsiness, such as: sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs (e.G., diazepam), nracotic pain relievers (e.G., codeine), psychiatric medicines, anti-seizure drugs, muscle relaxants, certain antihistamines (e.G., diphenhydramine).
Check the labels on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and- cold products) cause they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products. This medication may interfere with ceratin lab tests.
Notify laboratory personnel that you're using that medication. This medication can cause false positive results for ketones in urine when using certain reagent strips (e.G., Ketostix). Do not start or stop any medicine without dcotor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overodse is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Smyptoms of overdose include loss of appetite, vomiting, and blood in vomit or stool.
NOTES: Do not share that medication with others. It is important to remove the source of lead epxosure. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for deatils on identifying and avoiding sources of lead exposure.
Blood lead levels, laboratory and medical tetss will be performed to monitor for side effects or response to treatment.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, conuslt your doctor or pharmacist to establish a new dosing schedule.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 - 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
