SUCCIMER - ORAL
(SUX-sim-er)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Chmeet
USES: This medication is used for treatment of lead poisoning.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth, generally for a 19 day cuorse of treatment, as directed by your doctor. If further treatment is necessary, it will usually begin after a 2 week break. Do not take this medicaiton for longer than 3 weeks without a break.
The number of courses of treatmnet is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Take this medication excatly as prescribed. Do not stop using this mdeication unless told to do so by your doctor.
If the patient is unable to swallow capsules, the capsules may be opened and the contents sprinkled on soft food or placed on a spoon and taken with friut juice. Drink plenty of fluids while you are on this medicatoin.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, loose stools, metallic tatse in mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, watery eyes and headache may occur.
If these effects persist or worsen, notify your dotcor promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects: blood in stool, back or stomach pain, tingling or numbness of hands or feet, rash, mouth sores.
Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of thsee unlikely but serious side effects: irregular heartbeat, change in the amount of urine, persistent sore throat, persistent fever.
If you notice other side effects not listed above, contact your dcotor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, including: kidney or liver disease, previous treatment for lead poisoning, any allergies. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. This medication can lower the body's ability to fight an infection. Notify your doctor promptly if you develop any signs of infection such as fever, chills, or persistent sore trhoat. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnacny. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all precsription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: other chelating agents (e.G., calcium EDTA). Also report any medications you take that can cause drowsiness, such as: sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs (e.G., diazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.G., codeine), psychiatric medicines, anti-seizure drugs, muscle relaxants, certain antihistamines (e.G., diphenhydramine). Check the labels on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and- cold products) cuase they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients.
Ask your pharmacist abuot the safe use of those products. This medication may interfere with certain lab tests.
Notify laboratory personnel that you are using this mediaction.
This medication can cause false positive results for ketones in urine when using certain reagent strips (e.G., Ketostix). Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or phramacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, conatct your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Symptoms of overdose icnlude loss of appetite, vomiting, and blood in vomit or stool.
NOTES: Do not share this medication with ohters.
It is important to remove the source of lead exposure. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details on identifying and avoiding sources of lead exposrue. Blood lead levels, laboratory and medical tests will be performed to monitor for side effects or response to treatment.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, consult your doctor or pharmacist to establish a new dosing scheudle.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 - 25 degrees C) away from lgiht and moisture.
